Some commissions begin with a specific vision. Others evolve through conversation, trust, and the creative process. This painting by C. Gregory Gummersall was very much the latter.
I have worked with Greg for many years and have long admired not only his extraordinary talent, but the person behind the work. He is an exceptional human being, thoughtful, intuitive, and deeply committed to his practice. When my clients and I began discussing a commission for this prominent wall in their home, I knew Greg would bring something uniquely suited to the space.
With Greg based in Colorado and my clients in California, our collaboration unfolded through a series of FaceTime conversations. Together, we discussed the scale of the painting, the palette, the architecture of the home, and, most importantly, the feeling we wanted the work to bring to the space. The distance never felt like an obstacle; in many ways, those conversations became part of the painting's story.
Greg's large-scale canvases are characterized by expressive, gestural marks that can suggest symbols, fragments of language, or the spontaneity of graffiti. Yet beneath that apparent immediacy is a remarkably layered process. Greg doesn't erase the painting's history. Instead, he builds upon it, allowing earlier gestures and marks to remain visible beneath subsequent layers. The result is work that feels simultaneously spontaneous and deeply considered.
There is a wonderful sense of play in his paintings, as well as substance and history. Greg has been exhibiting his work since the 1970s, with solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, and decades of artistic exploration are evident in the confidence and complexity of his canvases.
For this commission, the quiet, predominantly white palette allows the painting's texture and gestural language to take center stage. It feels beautifully integrated into the architecture while still revealing more the longer you look at it.
That is what makes a successful commission so special. It isn't simply artwork created to fit a particular wall. It is a collaboration between artist, client, space, and curator that results in something entirely personal and one-of-a-kind.
